Artist's Description
Over 20 plus years of painting on Catalina Island with PAPA, we visited the far side of the island at least once each year, to capture it's raw beauty and power. This was the results of one year's adventures! Hope you enjoy it!!! Much longer story of the creation of this one...but, perhaps saved for a book!!!
About Elizabeth - Betty Jean Billups
If you are interested in any image you find on this website, and cannot get an image large enough for your liking, please contact me, and I will be sure FAA has a digital image to accommodate your order! Capturing an inner feeling, so quickly passing, that's beyond words, almost beyond thought: the nuances that dance between a mountain & the sky that embraces her, creating a symphony that the eyes perceive, but only the soul remembers. This celebration of light upon the physical & ethereal worlds, creates a love affair for the viewer. It's this special moment that excites me, that drives me to risk failure, if I but the chance to capture a fraction of what I see, feel or know, from this wonderful experience we call "Life!!"...

For over 10 years, members of PAPA would meet at Catalina Island, and spend the week before our exhibition, painting around the island. This group, created by Denise Burns, is what created the tremendous movement "en plein air". I offered to do all the ads to promote us, throughout the 10 years, and it became the major force behind the wonderful plein air movement that has occurred these past 20 years! Those first 10 years, so many artists were asking to be in the show, and couldn't get into the next years' guest list, so started their own group!! All the paintings that I do en plein air, are seldom ever touched up in the studio. (I know some artists that paint “en plein air”, then go to their studios and put almost as much time into the piece, as they spent on location. In my opinion, this is NO longer a plein air painting, it is a studio piece! Guess I am just a purist!!!) ... about the only thing I do in the studio, is sign it and frame it! This piece took HOURS...trying to understand, not only the wave action, but "the spaces between"!! Also, understanding the value pattern, as objects recede into the distance! AND at the same time, not allowing a shift in time, due to the sun’s movement!!!
